On Friday October 13, 2017 I had a great evening in Gravenhurst shooting the hometown South Muskoka Bears Norstar Novice Rep hockey team and the visiting Huntsville Otters. It was impossible for me to pick only one side so I cheered for both. I like Bears and Otters for so many reasons!…

I have my own young bear living in the forest behind my house.

And I have a family of otters living around the backyard pond.

You might think that I’d have to cheer for the Bears since my name begins with a “B“, and since a relative nicknamed me “Bear” when I was little, and since I share the same birthday with the South Muskoka Bears Hockey league president!  But wait, my surname is Otter so that evens things up again! As you can see I have lots of good reasons to cheer for Bears and Otters!

Thank you to Tanya Neal, Otters Manager, for quickly getting back to me with a scoring summary of the game. I haven’t heard back yet from the Bears so this game summary may be updated if any new details come in.

Update: Thank you  Huntsville Doppler  for running the  article about the Otters and Bears hockey game !

Friday October 13, the Huntsville Otters novice rep hockey team faced off against the South Muskoka Bears in Gravenhurst. Spectators were treated to three solid penalty-free periods of end-to-end action, great saves by the goalies and some clever goal scoring too.

Otters player Dylan Bennett, assisted by Carter Quinlan, opened the scoring in the first period. The Bears replied with a goal in the second period, then good defense and goaltending on both sides kept the score tied at one-a-piece to set up an exciting third period.

In the third period Avery Shirtliff, unassisted, scored the Otters’ second goal. A diving tip-in at the Bears net earned Dylan Bennett, assisted by Chayse Woods, his second goal of the game and gave the Otters a 3-1 lead.

The Bears scored in the third period to pull within one goal of the Otters. The Otters tight defense and goaltending shut the Bears scoring down for the remainder of the game. The Otters scored once more on a shot by Carson Frasier, assisted by Chayse Woods, to end the game 4-2.

With this win over the South Muskoka Bears the Huntsville Otters Novice Rep team improved their winning record to 4-1 on the season.

On Sunday October 15 the Otters traveled to Collingwood to take on the Blackhawks. The Collingwood Blackhawks took the game 5-1. The Otters are looking forward to the next stop on their long road-trip season. This will be a fun day for everyone’s favorite “Oh”s as it will be the Otters vs the Oro Thunder in Oro on October 21!

It was great to see both these teams so I hope to get invited back to see another game this season!

My objective for the night was to check out the lighting in the rink and to get some shots for the media. I wanted to get some individual shots of players from both teams as well as shots of the overall action. I’ve shot in hundreds of rinks over the last 30+ years and always find that each one has its own character for shooting game action photographs. The rink in Gravenhurst certainly is challenging but I was pleased to get a good number of nice shots on my first outing in this arena.

I see that both teams have their own web pages, and social media pages too, where they share info about their games. South Muskoka Bears and Huntsville Otters teams, you are welcome to make use of my photos for your official pages. Feel free to pick out a few and let me know the file numbers appearing on the photos so I can send you web ready images with the watermarks removed.

Photos are available to the families of players too. I recently posted a  rate sheet  and mentioned a special offer – a season pass to all the photos I shoot of a player during the 2017-2018 season, playoffs and tournaments included! The more often I am invited out to shoot the more game action photos you may end up with at no additional cost. As I am based in Gravenhurst-Bracebridge this offer may be most advantageous to players expecting to play in the south Muskoka area a number of times during the 2017-2018 season.

Thank you Bears and Otters for putting on a great game. I hope to see both teams again soon this season! If you’d like me to cover another game any time please use my  contact page  to send me an invite.
