What’s not included:
No “spray-and-hope” photography – Some inexperienced photographers rely on shooting huge quantities of photos in a rush, randomly and haphazardly rather than relying on skill and experience to spot and craft good shots. Spray-and-hope photography however is a poor substitute for skill and experience as it typically generates a staggering number of low quality photos and rarely any good ones.
No “camera dumps” – massive galleries with hundreds or thousands of unedited and unprocessed low quality photos to wade through.
No photo uploads appearing within minutes of the shoot. Instant uploads clearly indicate a total lack of proper editing and processing. Rushing to present poorly shot and unedited photos reveals that quality isn’t a priority to the photographer, and makes the assumption that their clients won’t care or notice either.
In my 35+ years working as a professional photographer I have never done spray-and-hope photography, inflicted camera dumps on clients or cut corners on getting the photos properly taken and prepared. I value your time and mine, take quality seriously and am certain it matters to you too. I shoot selectively, take as much time and care as needed to create the good shots, and only process work that I feel is worthy of display.
Below is a small sample of hockey photos from my most recent photography sessions during the 2017-2018 hockey season. The photos were taken in numerous rinks in Muskoka and beyond. Included in this collection are photos from several South Muskoka Bears hockey teams, a few Huntsville Otters teams, Newmarket Redmen, Collingwood Blackhawks, Mississippi Thunderkings (Ottawa area), Oro Thunder and Temiskaming Shores Puckhounds.
I have to give a special mention to my little goalie buddy, “Keyan”, on the Temiskaming Shores Puckhounds team. He sure earned a new fan on the day I photographed one of his games! The little Puckhound, in skates and with his helmet on, still wasn’t quite tall enough for his head to touch the crossbar on his goal – but boy could he fill that net and stop almost every puck thrown at him!
As a goalie too I find myself always scanning the ice trying to spot and anticipate developing plays, and as a photographer the goalie habits I’ve developed certainly help in taking photos. It is specially interesting to watch young goalies to see how they anticipate the action and to see how they react to it. I always want them to do well and I feel for them if they hit a rough patch. But, when a goalie is in the zone, as Keyan absolutely was, it is an amazing sight. There is something incredibly impressive and satisfying in watching a player, even if he isn’t quite four feet tall yet, doing all the things in net that I can only dream of being able to do. 🙂
Seeing players like Keyan have great games makes hockey photography so much fun. I always feel most fortunate any time I can be there with a camera to witness the fun and capture some of the big games and big moments the little guys have.
