Seeing the equestrian events at the fair brought back memories of the fun I had as the official photographer touring with a pro rodeo tour company. At the rodeo I was expected to get shots of the riders so I paid a lot of attention to the events with broncs, bulls and ropers. But the real fun that I looked forward to on rodeo weekends was seeing the mutton busters. As far as I was concerned those were always the most fun events to photograph. In between events, and in the evenings after the crowds went home, I also liked doing photos of the cowboy’s kids as they hung around the rodeo grounds all weekend. When the show was back on again during the days many of those little cowboys spent their time at my side “helping” me take photos. The country environment and activity was perfect for the photography I like doing. Out in farm country with little cowboy kids, horses and rodeo stuff going on all around is a perfect recipe for photos. I miss doing it, but at the fair it all came back when I saw that mix of country kids and horses in the equestrian events.

One of the little participants in the Lead Line event had just appeared in the parade. She had a busy day being so important at the fair! And she’s not quite two years old yet! The little rider sat confidently on her horse and loved her ride around the arena.

The other rider in the Lead Line event was a little cowboy who waited patiently for his turn to get on a horse. Once in the saddle he handled it like a pro. He kept a hand on the rope and another on the saddle horn and never let go for a moment. The only time he released his grip was at the end as he needed a free hand to receive his ribbon. Nice work little cowboy! Here are your photos…
