This post includes photos from the Severn Bridge Fall Fair Toddler Contest, Country Squire and Miss Moppet Contests and the Junior Ambassador contest. As was the case with the Baby Contest in the last post, I don’t know how these contests are judged so if anyone from the fair would like to explain, please feel free to use the comment section at the bottom of this post.

The toddler contest saw lots of interesting personalities and outfits. A little girl in an all denim outfit happily stood on the stage with her well-loved stuffed toy cat. She clearly adores the cat and got the greatest pleasure showing it to everyone. It seemed as if she might have innocently believed we had all gathered to see the precious cat, and not realized that eyes were on her instead.
A smartly dressed little boy joined the stage with his popsicle or ice cream in hand, or perhaps it was a sucker. I’m not sure if it was part of the outfit but it quickly became part of his stage makeup. Amazingly he didn’t get a drop of it on his perfect white shirt. He surely scored some extra points for that. As the MC introduced each contestant the little guy put his cap under his arm and looked up with big eyes at the tall man with the mic. I snapped a picture and now every time I see that photo I think of the famous quote from Dickens’ Oliver Twist: “Please sir, I want more sir” (ice cream or whatever that was he had with him on stage). 🙂
The Miss Moppet contest had several eager contestants including one who galloped to the stage with her yellow/orange stuffed horse toy. The Country Squire contest however had a bit of difficulty attracting competitors. Most of the eligible boys were running around the fairgrounds or jumping in the bouncy castle. A little boy wearing a Paw Patrol t-shirt and shoes patiently waited on stage for any other boy to show up and make it a competition. Fortunately a bigger boy decided to be a very good sport and join the contest.
The MC asked the Country Squire entrants if they had any special talents. Little Paw Patrol enthusiastically replied “Yes! I can sing and dance!”. When prompted to demonstrate he took a long moment to think of any song he could sing and dance to. Someone from the audience suggested “Coming ’round the Mountain”. The uninhibited little boy confidently burst into song and dance. He really wanted to put everything he had into his shot at becoming this year’s Country Squire! And it worked! He became the Country Squire and the girl with her toy horse was awarded the Miss Moppet title.
Both kids were very pleased. The little boy couldn’t wait to fulfill his first duty as Country Squire – that is to wear the special blue sash and carry the green prize bag while scampering as fast as his little paws could carry him, patrolling every corner of the fairgrounds to be sure everyone would know that he had been declared the winner.
A few minutes later the Junior Ambassador contest began with one boy and one girl entered. The MC asked those contestants about their talents too. The boy might have said his special talent was baseball as he’d just completed a busy baseball season. Or he could have mentioned his talent for hockey as he’s gearing up for another season with the South Muskoka Bears hockey league. But, the first thing that came to mind was his ability to do the Floss Dance. However, before he could show his moves the girl spoke up “I can do that too!”. She immediately began frantically dancing, which apparently is what the Floss Dance is supposed to look like. The boy quickly started dancing too.
Yes as you might expect, the Junior Ambassador contest came down to a Floss Dance death match, perhaps the traditional way of deciding the Jr. Ambassador title since the very beginning of the Severn Bridge Fall Fair 145 years ago. The dancing frenzy was over in less than 10 seconds, then the judges deliberated, made their decision, declaring the young girl as this year’s Junior Ambassador.
