Hello MPBA, Midland Penetanguishene Baseball Association, here are your photos from a Muskoka Cup game played in Gravenhurst! I apologize for the long wait but I hope you’ll feel it’s worth it. As your baseball game started in the early evening, while the sun was getting low, I needed to take photos from the Midland side of the baseball diamond, otherwise I would have been shooting into the setting sun. As far as sports photography goes this turned out to be advantageous for the Midland Twins baseball team. I ended up getting a good number of photos for the Midland team, including some of my favorite game action and dugout photographs of the day.
For a brief time the sun found a gap in the trees and beamed light on home plate as the surrounding area remained in shade. This created the effect of spotlighting the batters nicely in photos. The moment didn’t last long but while it did it was great for baseball photography around home plate. As well as looking for where the spotlights landed as the sun poked through the trees, I kept an eye out for interesting shadows too. It was a nice time of day to have shadows play a part in the photography. In fact, as you see in the examples of the runners above, I like to keep shadows complete and intact if possible. Having parts cut off the shadows would be just as uncomfortable to me as when parts of people themselves are clipped. When shadows are complete with the subject the balance feels right to me in photos like these.
In some cases, like the last photo above (first base with the ball in the air) well placed shadows make the usually empty space of the infield surface look much more interesting. But care has to be taken with shadows too as sometimes they can spoil a nice photo by being too distracting.
That covers highlights and shadows – the real sports action photography is coming I promise! Baseball players making big swings, runners rounding bases, fielders throwing and catching. It’s what you came to see and will see in the gallery section below. But first…. 🙂 I’d like to interrupt this baseball photo page to say that the Midland Twins sure know how to get the most fun out of bubble gum! Below are a few of my favorite photos of Midland Twins baseball players who showed great skill, creativity and endurance with bubble gum:
From the above set I award the most casual bubble maker to #18. Coolest bubble maker goes to #7. And for #10, duuuude! You just killed it! You’re the MVP bubble maker. If I get a chance to photograph the Midland Twins baseball team again I’ll supply the gum! 🙂
By the way, if any of you play hockey then keep me in mind when hockey season starts! I am usually busy photographing hockey games in Muskoka (Gravenhurst, Bracebridge and up to Huntsville) and sometimes see teams from Midland at the local rinks. If you have any games or tournaments in the area let me know and I’ll see if it’s possible to come out with the cameras.
Below are all the Midland Twins baseball photos from the Muskoka Cup game in Gravenhurst. Each photo is marked in a corner with a file number which helps identify the image in the event anyone would like to request a large copy for printing.
A quick heads-up about the photos: Though I got a lot of baseball photos for the Midland Twins I probably didn’t get a photo of everyone. I apologize if you were missed. My approach to shooting sports action is to try to get worthwhile pictures so I shoot selectively and don’t use the “spray and hope” method that many beginner sports photographers rely on. Shooting selectively generates fewer photos but more good ones so it raises the possibility that some players might have been missed. At this game I was trying to get photos for both teams so my attention was always split on the field. Any parents who talked to me before or during the game will see that they have a good selection of photographs as I was able to then specially look out for their players. While taking photographs I tried to get good coverage for everyone else too, but again, I’m sorry if you were missed. Please invite me out again so I can make up for it!
In this Midland Twins baseball photos page I have not disabled downloading of pictures or covered photos with watermarks to inhibit their use. The work was created for the team to enjoy, share and use free of charge. This was not a paid shoot but an entirely voluntary effort to create some nice work for you.
If you enjoy the photos and would like to show appreciation I would be grateful! Please go to the Contribute page to see how you can help support my work.
I’ve also added a “create your own review” button below, and a new testimonials page where you can leave a rating and review. I will greatly appreciate it if you take a moment to leave some input as it may help other local sports families and teams notice the Shooting For The Stars site and become aware of the photography and service available to them. Thank you! – Boyd Otter
